What an absolute gift it was to spend this day with Jocelyn and James! They are truly the sweetest couple, and their families and friends were full of palpable joy for this incredibly special day. We had plenty of sunshine, mountain views, and a beautiful Lion Dance courtesy of Laughing Dragon Kung Fu. The night ended with dancing and a bonfire. Doesn’t get much better than that!

I offered my first Short Sessions in the fall of 2010. A friend planted the seed for the idea and we just decided to go for it. We learned along the way, what worked for us and what did not, but the format for the Short Sessions has remained the same all these years. Clients pay a small sitting fee for a short portrait session and all prints and digital files are purchased separately. This summer I had the pleasure of photographing Zoë for her senior portrait. Not only is Zoë a first year at UVA, she is the founder of a youth organization called DICCE, which stands for Diversity, Inclusion, Cultural Competency, and Equity. We were so impressed with her mission that we asked her to answer a few questions!
RRP: Can you tell me a little about DICCE and what compelled you to start this organization?
Zoë: In my junior year of high school, I founded DICCE which is an organization creating diversity, equity, and inclusion materials for Gen Z by Gen Z. Many schools do not teach students a comprehensive United States history curriculum that talks about the role of race and identity in our nation’s development and its impacts on life today. This, on top of a lack of DEI training for young people, contributes to micro-aggressions and naivety about how identity impacts lived experiences — which cascades into more injustices as students pursue careers and participate in our democracy. Through DICCE, I am hoping to fill that gap in our schools and empower kids to be equity and empathy driven — regardless of their postsecondary plans.
RRP: Future major and/or career aspirations?
Zoë: I am planning on double majoring in Spanish and Public Policy. I am still undecided on my exact career, but I know I want to be involved in education policy. That will likely mean working at an education non-profit, local school decision-making groups, or the Department of Education (or a run for office).
RRP: What are you most looking forward to as a Wahoo?
Zoë: I am looking forward to exploring intellectually and being surrounded by students who are curious about the world and making it a better place! I am super stoked about being able to pick my classes and the flexibility I will have to try out new fields.

At the same time, it is terrifying to feel that we are as a society totally unmoored, adrift at sea, with a diseased and corrupt captain not quite at the helm. And if we somehow make it through without too much damage, they will try to make us forget, to erase the time when an abdication of leadership caused everything to stop, and teeter on the edge of collapse. So we need to document what happened, so we always remember.”
Yet, there are many bright moments in this…increased family time, enjoying our eldest daughter before she heads off to college, cooking together, reading more books, and enjoying the outdoors more as a family. But let’s be certain, I wish it didn’t take a global pandemic for us to slow down. But through it all, I have seen the good come out of it…so many helpers. Robert being one of the very best. Thank you for doing this and raising so much money for the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and including us in your project!”
“It has been a time of challenge, togetherness, and creativity as we’ve moved Darden’s residential MBA Program online and tried to figure out how to support our local theater and performing arts community after having to go dark for the remainder of the season. It has been a reminder of how fortunate we are, a reminder of how much we love this community, and it’s been a reminder of how much this wonderful community has given our family. We hope to be able to return these many gifts however we can. “Our son is in the high risk category with Type 1 Diabetes, so we have really been avoiding everyone and everything since the beginning of March. When Robert came by, we really hadn’t spoken to someone else in person for weeks. I know he was in a hurry and had a schedule to keep, but he just listened to us blabber about nothing for a good 15 minutes. We really appreciate the fact that he is raising money for the community while also helping us capture this strange time in our lives.”

This photo will be a reminder of an all too interesting time in our lives where there were few smiles and too many tears, but always the promise of life and springtime around the corner.”

We walked to our front porch for these pictures because people we’ve grown to love were doing something right and something good. On our front porch steps I looked into Stacy’s eyes and tried to reconcile my behavior with the overwhelming love I feel for her.
Stacy walks out our door each morning, down these steps, and goes to the clinic and cares for her patients every day, just as she has for all these many years. And I work from our kitchen table each day, as I have for all these many years. But now when Stacy Lynn comes home I sit In fear, if only for a moment, as she walks through the door. I’m afraid she’s going to tell me that she has a fever, that she’s developed a cough. We’ve accepted that because of her work she will contract the virus. But I guess when it comes right down to it, I haven’t really accepted my own desperate fear. I cannot lose her.”
