Spring Short Sessions Recap

I offered my first Short Sessions in the fall of 2010. A friend planted the seed for the idea and we just decided to go for it. We learned along the way, what worked for us and what did not, but the format for the Short Sessions has remained the same all these years. Clients pay a small sitting fee for a short portrait session and all prints and digital files are purchased separately. This is different from just about every other photographer who offers these type of portrait sessions, but I have found it works well because it also relieves the pressure on families for everything to be just right.

Here is a sampling of Short Session images from this past spring. My 2021 fall Short Sessions are almost booked…just one time slot open! I still have some availability for a full, one hour family portrait session so please inquire for more details!

Charlotte & William’s Engagement Session

Just about a year ago I received this message: “Hello! I hope you are well. My name is William and I am currently deployed to Iraq. My fiancé, Charlotte is currently deployed to Afghanistan so we are probably not your typical customers.”

It has been an honor and a privilege to correspond with and finally meet William and Charlotte. When William asked if he could bring his son to the engagement session I said absolutely, and I am so glad he did. He was a trooper, hanging back while Charlotte and William posed for portraits, expertly photobombing them, and joining in with an easy smile when asked. I cannot wait to photograph their wedding in just a few weeks!

Senior Spotlight: Zoë J.

This summer I had the pleasure of photographing Zoë for her senior portrait. Not only is Zoë a first year at UVA, she is the founder of a youth organization called DICCE, which stands for Diversity, Inclusion, Cultural Competency, and Equity. We were so impressed with her mission that we asked her to answer a few questions!

RRP: Can you tell me a little about DICCE and what compelled you to start this organization?

Zoë: In my junior year of high school, I founded DICCE which is an organization creating diversity, equity, and inclusion materials for Gen Z by Gen Z. Many schools do not teach students a comprehensive United States history curriculum that talks about the role of race and identity in our nation’s development and its impacts on life today. This, on top of a lack of DEI training for young people, contributes to micro-aggressions and naivety about how identity impacts lived experiences — which cascades into more injustices as students pursue careers and participate in our democracy. Through DICCE, I am hoping to fill that gap in our schools and empower kids to be equity and empathy driven — regardless of their postsecondary plans.

RRP: Future major and/or career aspirations?

Zoë: I am planning on double majoring in Spanish and Public Policy. I am still undecided on my exact career, but I know I want to be involved in education policy. That will likely mean working at an education non-profit, local school decision-making groups, or the Department of Education (or a run for office).

RRP: What are you most looking forward to as a Wahoo?

Zoë: I am looking forward to exploring intellectually and being surrounded by students who are curious about the world and making it a better place! I am super stoked about being able to pick my classes and the flexibility I will have to try out new fields.

Bravo Zoë! Best wishes for an amazing year at UVA. Thanks for being a shining light in our community!

Sneak Peek: Caroline & Connor, June 26, 2021

Caroline and Connor had the distinction of being the inaugural wedding at the newly built event barn at Guildford Farm, a beautiful estate in Ruckersville, VA. Expertly planned by the amazing Barb Lundgren of Barb Wired Events, this was a picture perfect day and I am so grateful to have played a part in documenting the happy occasion!

It takes a village to raise a kid, a barn, and to create a wonderful wedding day! Kudos to this A-team group of wedding vendors:

Venue: Guildford Farm

Planner: Barb Wired Events

Catering: Blue Ridge Catering

Florals: Colonial Florists

DJ: Virginia Party Masters

Sneak Peek: Ann Tolley & Ian, June 20, 2021

Ann Tolley and Ian were married amongst a small group of family and friends, at a beautiful family farm just outside of Charlottesville, VA. I’ve known Ann Tolley and her family for many years, so it was an honor to be with them on this special day. Not to mention, my daughter, whom Ann Tolly used to babysit, was my assistant! A beautiful day, full of lots of love and laughter, just as a wedding should be!
